Gandhian Young Technological Innovation (GYTI) Awards celebrates the spirit of student innovation in all the fields of engineering, science, technology and design through extremely affordable/frugal solution or the ones pushing the technological edge. These could deal for example, with a) communities at grassroots, b) co-creation with grassroots innovators, c) manufacturable technologies for saving or generating energy, sanitation, water purification, saving material consumption, d) biotechnology and medical devices, e) diagnostics, f) assistive devices for physically challenged, and all others areas of social and industrial applications. One can submit more than one application in hard-core manufacturing areas, including but not restricted to aerospace, transportation, construction, textile, electronics, Nano-technologies, computer science applications etc.

SRISTI (Society for Research and Initiatives for Sustainable Technologies and Institutions) celebrates the creativity and innovation of young technological students by recognising their outstanding projects with Gandhian Young Technological Innovation (GYTI) Awards. It is hoped that such recognition will enthuse young innovators to pursue even more outstanding research addressing unmet social needs and set up entrepreneurial ventures in consonance with Start-Up movement gaining strength currently in India.

SRISTI has established three national awards for innovative student projects in Engineering, Biotechnology, Agriculture, Pharmacy, Material Science and other applied technological domains. These awards are given every year during the Festival of Innovation And Entrepreneurship (FINE), Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi in the month of March.

Awards:

The categories of the GYTI awards are:

 

• MLM (More from Less for Many) Award: This award will be given to the innovations which use significantly less material/energy to create sustainable solutions. Frugality and creating value for many by using lesser material, energy, and resource could be the key focus while bench-marking such innovations.

 

• SRISTI social technological Award: The student projects which have demonstrable proof of concept/ prototype having a significant amount of novelty and social applications are eligible for this award. Projects completed in or after 2017 can be submitted by the students or their faculty supervisors on their behalf.

 

• Technological-Edge Award: A breakthrough or a significant technological advance in any field of engineering, pharmacy, medical, agricultural, or other disciplines will entitle a student to qualify for this award.

 

• BIRAC-SRISTI award for biotechnological/medical/healthcare innovation: A technology having the potential for reaching the masses and/or addressing a felt social need or making it extremely affordable compared to the available solution and technologies having prospects of going to market to be preferred for selection. Up to fifteen of the selected innovations may be given a grant of Rs.15 lac each and another 20-30 idea may be granted one lac each for taking the idea forward after they add value to grassroots innovations in Biotechnological Innovation Ignition School (BIIS) or sustainable practices at SRISTI, Ahmedabad.

 

• Hari Om Ashram Prerit Dr. Amulya K.N. Reddy GYTI Award for various disciplines

 

• ​SITARE-GYTI award for biotechnological/medical/healthcare innovation, applications to be submitted at BIRAC site from September 20 onwards: For the awards in biotechnological, life sciences, medical devices, agriculture, pharmacy, etc., the applications can be submitted online by the postgraduate students at BIRAC website. These applications will be titled as SITARE-GYTI award from September 20, 2019 onwards.

 

Grants and other Opportunities:

Financial support is also given to some of the awardees as per following windows of opportunity:

 

• BIRAC-SRISTI GYTI Awards – Rs 15, 00,000 grants will be given for further research / prototype development and possible entrepreneurship development work to each of the 15 awardees in medical device and biotech area.

 

• BIRAC-SRISTI GYTI Appreciation Awards – Rs 1, 00,000  is given to 100 Grassroots and student innovations / ideas (School/UG/PG) for value addition at different labs including SRISTI Sadbhav Sanshodhan Lab.

 

• Hariom Ashram prerit, Dr. Amulaya K. N. Reddy GYTI Award – Rs 50,000 each to Five GYTI awardees.

The awardees can choose to join the Bionest Incubator likely to be set up at SRISTI in collaboration with BIRAC and DBT, New Delhi. SRISTI plans to organize several summer/winter schools on inclusive innovations. Awardees can join those and develop innovative solutions to unmet social needs in a time bound manner.

 

Eligibility:

Student projects which address an important social, environmental or technological problem faced by masses or disadvantaged people/sectors/spaces or micro and small enterprises, or have the potential to impact a pressing national need are invited. The applications may be made by the past or present students of technical institutions/universities. On behalf of the students who have already passed out and left the Institute/ University, the faculty member, who supervised the project, can also apply but awards would be given only to students willing to take their ideas forward.
